Understanding Charging Standards in 2026

Charging technology has largely consolidated around USB-C, but not all chargers and cables are created equal. The connector may look the same, yet the power a cable can carry and a charger can deliver varies widely.

Wattage is what matters most. A phone may charge fine with a 20W adapter, while a laptop often needs 60W or more. Using a lower-wattage charger than your device supports will usually still work, just more slowly. Wireless charging is convenient for overnight topping up, but it is generally slower and generates more heat than wired charging.

Look for certified chargers when possible, and keep cables away from extreme heat or tension. The right setup keeps your gear ready without adding clutter.
